Rudy Giuliani Says Democrats Play Defense in War on Terror

Former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani accused Democrats of being on the defensive in the war on terrorism and said he would rather hear Gen. David Petraeus' assessment of the situation in Iraq than listen to lawmakers' calls for change in Iraq.

Giuliani, making his first visit to western Pennsylvania since announcing his candidacy for the Republican nomination for president, said Wednesday that Democrats wanted "to go back to the 1990s," referring to his comments a day earlier that the Clinton administration made a mistake by treating the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center as a criminal, not terrorist, act.

"It seems to me they don't get the point," Giuliani said.

Without Gore, who has not said he is running, the advantage in the Democratic race goes even more to Clinton. Based on the second choice of Gore's supporters, Clinton picks up five more points, compared with one more for Obama and three more for Edwards. Among Republicans, Giuliani's lead in Florida has narrowed since he held a 17-point margin over Thompson in early June. In the latest survey, the two split the white Evangelical vote, among the GOP's most loyal voters.

The telephone poll, by Quinnipiac University, was conducted June 18 to 25. Its survey of 359 Florida Democrats and 373 Republicans had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 5 percentage points for each.

Giuliani Slams Bill Clinton on Terrorism

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani on Tuesday accused former President Clinton of not responding forcefully enough to the 1993 World Trade Center bombing or later terrorist attacks.

The former New York mayor criticized Democrats, accusing them of weakness and naivete in dealing with terrorism. Giuliani made the comments to about 650 business, corporate and political leaders at Regent University, the conservative Christian college founded by religious broadcaster Pat Robertson.

Advocates for Victims of Priest Abuse Target Giuliani Friend, Employee

Advocates for victims of priest sexual abuse called on GOP presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani on Friday to fire a childhood friend and priest who was hired by the ex-mayor's security consulting business after being suspended from the clergy amid allegations he abused children and helped cover up offenses by others.

A spokeswoman for Giuliani said the firm had no plans to fire Msgr. Alan Placa.

"There's ample evidence showing that Placa consistently protected predators, shrewdly deceived victims, and covered up horrific clergy sex crimes," said a statement from David Clohessy, national director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests. SNAP also contends that he abused children.

Bloomy vs. Rudy: White House Showdown of New York Mayors?

Mayor Mike Bloomberg keeps denying that he'll run for president, but if he does he could face off against his friend, political benefactor and predecessor as mayor... Rudy Giuliani.

Giuliani Roommate Wants Bloomberg to Run

Mayor Michael Bloomberg bumped into a close ally of former Mayor Rudy Giuliani on Wednesday and heard a surprising plea: Go ahead and get into the 2008 presidential race.

Howard Koeppel, who let Giuliani live at his apartment when the Republican mayor's marriage to Donna Hanover broke up in 2001, saw Bloomberg by chance and ran up to whisper in his ear about the race starring two New Yorkers, Giuliani and Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Giuliani: Nation Lacks Strong Leadership

Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani, in an indirect swipe at President Bush, said Thursday the overwhelming attitude that the U.S. is headed in the wrong direction reflects a lack of leadership.

The nation's bleak mood was evident in the most recent Associated Press-Ipsos poll in which only 21 percent said they believe things in the U.S. are heading in the right direction, the worst mark since the AP-Ipsos poll began in December 2003.

Speaking at a Flag Day rally in Wilmington, Del., Giuliani told more than 200 supporters: "What we're lacking is strong, aggressive, bold leadership like we had with Ronald Reagan."

The same AP-Ipsos poll found public approval with the job Bush is doing at 32 percent, matching an all-time low.

The former New York mayor said he's running for president to keep the United States on offensive against terrorist and to challenge big government.

Before the rally, Guiliani attended a $1,000-a-plate fundraising breakfast that drew about 120 people.

He was joined at the rally by former FBI director Louis Freeh. Freeh, who lives in Wilmington, Del., serves as senior homeland security adviser for Guiliani campaign and heads the candidate's Delaware campaign.

Giuliani was making his second campaign appearance in Delaware this year. While the state has only three electoral votes, Guiliani said it could play a crucial role in the presidential race.

"When you look at 2000 and 2004, one state makes a difference," he told reporters after the rally. "You never know which one it's going to be."

Hollywood and Washington

Steven Spielberg has endorsed Hillary Clinton while his colleague David Geffen is going with Barack Obama. Hollywood usually sides with Democrats, though Rudy Giuliani has the support of Adam Sandler, Kelsey Grammer and Ben Stein.

Former Senator Al D'Amato Backs Fred Thompson Over Rudy Giuliani

A former Republican senator from Rudy Giuliani's home state says he is unhappy with the field of GOP presidential candidates and is backing someone who has not even officially entered the race yet.

Sen. Alfonse D'Amato announced he is supporting his former Senate colleague Fred Thompson, an actor-politician who has formed a presidential exploratory committee and is expected to launch a campaign this summer.
